Abstract: Purpose: This Dredging Operations and Environmental Research Technical Note (DOER-TN) describes a new set of test cases developed to investigate the behavior of the diffusion algorithm contained within the Particle Tracking Model (PTM). The test cases were designed to examine different aspects of diffusion in isolation and in combination. The test cases needed to be complex enough to mimic real-world conditions but idealized enough to have analytical solutions for comparison. These test cases were developed to achieve two objectives: verification of the diffusion algorithm and the establishment of benchmark test cases to confirm that future model updates will not have inadvertently degraded capabilities. This technical note describes how the model outputs compare with analytical predictions.
