Purpose: The purpose of this investigation has been the determination of development of frost action in the soils underlying airfield pavements as affected by various conditions of weather, soils, and groundwater. This report presents the results of the frost investigation conducted at Presque Isle Airfield, Presque Isle, Maine during the period from 22 October 1944 through 16 June 1945. The investigation at Presque Isle Airfield includes two test areas in which observations were made of ground water table, frost penetration, ice segregation, water content, and density. Plate bearing tests were made on the pavements and base materials. In place CBR tests were made on the subgrade and laboratory CBR tests were made on remolded representative base and subgrade materials. Atterberg limits and mechanical, analyses were performed on representative samples. The climatic and other general conditions related to the frost investigation at Presque Isle Airfield also are included in this report.
