| Abstract: | In June 2002, the main American base camps in Bosnia and Kosovo were visited to record the types of facilities being used for waste management and to identify any lessons to be learned. This study concluded that the Army should develop a deployable wastewater treatment system for base camps. Development of such a system would avoid the costly set-up and take-down operations required with conventional plants. Also, Eagle Base and Camp Bondsteel would benefit from installing composting operations for sludge stabilization and disinfection. The water supplies are potable at both locations. There is no longer a need to supply drinking water in plastic bottles, so eliminating them will significantly reduce the solid waste stream. |
