| Abstract: | In 1986 the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) reached out to a contractor,Photographic Interpretation Corp. (PIC), to create an inventoried collection of all the aerial images of the ice cover on the Ohio River held by various United States Army Corps of Engineer (USACE) entities. This collection was created in response to that. The project was to "locate, duplicate, assemble and inventory existing aerial images of ice cover all along the Ohio River which were in the possession of the Corps of Engineers." [1]PIC reached out to the Ohio River Division (ORD) and the Pittsburgh, Huntington, and Louisville Districts and received original images, which were duplicated to create this collection.Related Archival Materials: The 650 prints in this collection contain "examples of river ice patterns which historically have occurred on the Ohio River" dated between 1928 and 1985.[2] "The photographic reproductions were enlarged to 8"x10", 8"x12", and 9"x9" as required and filed according to river mile in five mile increments (starting with Mile 0 at Pittsburgh)... with each photograph annotated on its reverse with a river mile number, a photo designator letter, and the date of photography, if known... The index card system contains more complete information if it exists; including the name of the holding agency or office of the original photograph."[3] More information can be found in the final report provided by PIC (see reference citations in Finding Aid). |
