Abstract: A preliminary exploration of the damsite at Patoka Dam, Indiana, revealed foundation materials with extremely low penetration resistance. Since the area in which the site is located has a history of moderate seismic activity, a laboratory study was conducted to evaluate the earthquake liquefaction potential. A simplified analysis of the laboratory test results showed that the foundation is expected to liquefy if subjected to an earthquake of magnitude 6.5 with a peak acceleration of 0.17 g or greater. The U.S. Army Engineer District, Louisville considered the results of the investigation to be incomplete and therefore requested a one-dimensional (1-D) wave-propagation analysis of the dam and foundation using the soil profile at the center line of the dam cross section. Results of a limited analysis using a Fourier solution to the 1-D wave-propagation problem closely agreed with results obtained using a lumped-mass solution, which show that foundation soils are expected to strain badly if subjected to the design earthquake with a peak acceleration of 0.4 g.-
