dc.descriptionForeword: This paper was prepared at the request of ACI Committee 523 on "Insulating and Cellular Concretes," as one of four papers to be presented in the "Symposium on Low-Density Concretes" to be held at the 66th Annual Convention of the American Concrete Institute at New York City on 17 April 1970. The manuscript was reviewed and cleared for presentation and publication at the Office, Chief of Engineers. The many studies which provided the information and data discussed herein were conducted by the U. s. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES), Vicksburg, Mississippi, under the sponsorships of the Defense Atomic Support Agency; Air Force Weapons Laboratory; Air Force Office of Civil Engineering; Space and Missile System Organization, U. s. Air Force Systems Command; and Armed Services Explosives Safety Board. The work was accomplished during the period from 1961 to 1968 under the general supervision of Mr. T. B. Kennedy, former Chief, and Mr. Bryant Mather, present Chief, of the WES Concrete Division, and Mr. J. M. Polatty, Chief of the Engineering Mechanics Branch. Mr. George C. Hoff was the Project Officer for the majority of. the work discussed and prepared this paper. Directors of the WES during the conduct of these investigations and the preparation of this paper were COL Alex G. Sutton, Jr., CE, COL John R. Oswalt, Jr., CE, and COL Levi A. Brown, CE. Technical Directors were Mr. J. B. Tiffany and Mr. Fred R. Brown.-
