Circumpolar method for determining azimuth

Research noteAbtract: A new reticle, designed especially for the M2-A2 Aiming circle, enables an operator to determine north without the need for star tables, timing equipment, or computations. This method uses three circumpolar stars: a Ursae Minoris, l) Ursae Minoris, and 43 Cephei. The reticle has three concentric circles, one for each star. When the aiming circle's telescope is adjusted so that the circles are positioned on their respective stars, the telescope is aligned north. The azimuth to a ground object can then be determined with the aiming circle. A similar reticle has been designed for use in the southern hemisphere. This method requires less than 2 minutes, providing an error of less than 2 mils, and only 20 minutes additional training for operators of the M2-A2 Aiming Circle
