Study of channels with changing sections

Synopsis: This memorandum constitutes a report on the results of experiments having to do with flow in converging and diverging channels. Twenty-one tests of from one to four runs each have been conducted under carrying conditions in a specially constructed tapering channel. These tests indicate (1) that comparison of water-surface profiles under the two channel conditions (converging and diverging) is not suitable on the basis of like axial slopes because of the presence of shooting flow in all such tests with divergence downstream, and (2) that suitable comparisons can be made on the basis of like bottom slopes. Comparison of water-surface profiles on the basis of like bottom slope show that the slope of the water-surface for a given set of hydraulic conditions is steeper in a converging channel than in a diverging channel.
