CRREL Report-
Abstract: A slow rate land treatment system that operates throughout the year in a very cold climate is described in detail. Information on the geology, soils, vegetation, wildlife and the climate at the site is also presented. Winter operational problems such as ice formation on the elevated spray laterals, and freezing and plugging of the spray nozzles are discussed, as are their solutions. The detailed results of a 1-year study to characterize the seasonal performance of the system, to develop N and P budgets for the system, to monitor specific hydrologic events on the spray field, to monitor shallow groundwater quality, to monitor the groundwater quality in off-site wells, and to monitor the water quality of two rivers that border the site are presented. Recommendations for the design and operation of other slow rate land treatment systems to be constructed in cold climates are included.-
