Description: Report
Preface: The Committee on Tidal Hydraulics was established by the Chief of Engineers, on 20 October 1948, with the following objectives: A. To evaluate the present state of knowledge of tidal phenomena of interest to the Corps of Engineers. B. To recommend programs of study, investigation, and research designed to provide the knowledge necessary to arrive at adequate solutions for the engineering problems associated with such tidal phenomena. C. To exercise technical supervision of the prosecution of the recommended programs. Report No. l (see inside front cover) was published by the Committee in 1950 in fulfillment of the first objective. Since that time, the Committee has been concerned with the second and third objectives. During preparation of Report No. 1, the Committee became aware that there existed no comprehensive bibliography on tidal hydraulics. Accordingly, arrangements were made for the Research Center, Waterways Experiment Station, Corps of Engineers, to undertake compilation of the present volume. The bibliography consists of 836 references, all in the English language, selected after a review of almost four thousand items. The majority of the references listed are available for loan from the Research Center Library, Waterways Experiment Station, and the remainder are available at other offices of the Corps of Engineers and are so noted in the bibliography. Other references, not immediately available for review, are not included but will be considered for any possible revisions or supplements to this bibliography. An attempt has been made to exclude references to material not pertaining directly to tidal hydraulics. For instance, references on sedimentation which are not concerned specifically with the tidal regimen have been omitted because such references are fully covered in the bibliography on sedimentation prepared by the Federal Inter-Agency River Basin Subcommittee on Sedimentation. The bibliography consists of eight sections, as indicated by the table of contents which follows, and each section is preceded by a brief statement of its scope. As a further convenience to the user, the references are arranged alphabetically under each subject-matter heading (section) and all have been annotated. Although the majority of the references appear in more than one section, the annotation appears only once -- under the most applicable subject heading --with other listings of the reference omitting the annotation but including a key for its location. Copies of this and other reports of the Committee on Tidal Hydraulics may be obtained from the Recorder, care of Waterways Experiment Station, Corps of Engineers, P. O. Box 631, Vicksburg, Mississippi.
