A 1:100 physical navigation model was built to replicate the London Locks and Dam from river miles 84.4 to 8I.8 of the Kanawha River. This study was used to evaluate navigation conditions that would be created by the construction of a proposed upstream guard wall to replace the existing guard wall and to improve the navigation conditions in the upstream approach by use of skirts on the ports of the proposed wall. The model was also used to evaluate modifications that could be made in the lower pool approach to the locks that would reduce crosscurrents generated by the hydroelectric plant on the descending left bank side of the dam. The model was used to evaluate navigation conditions during the destruction phases of the existing upstream guard wall and to determine if navigation conditions could be improved during the destruction of the existing guard wall and construction of the proposed guard wall by temporary placement of a barge as a floating "guard wall" or by a helper boat to assist downbound traffic in the upper pool.-
