Abstract: This paper describes a technique which can be used to create a well-defined directly induced seismic energy source exclusive of any airblast effects. It was shown that spherical masses impacting on the ground surface produced ground motions which could be correlated with motions produced by high explosion tests. The tests conducted during this study included 26 spheres of varying size and density with weights ranging from 9 lb to 2,275 lb. Geophones were placed at various distances from the impact epicenter to measure ground surface particle velocity. An accelerometer was mounted on the sphere to monitor the deceleration during impact on the ground surface. Empirical equations were developed for the peak vertical particle velocity, period, wave group velocity and impact crater dimensions in terms of energy level and distance from the epicenter of the source. · The impact data obtained at WES were correlated with high explosive data obtained during the MIXED COMPANY test conducted in Colorado.
