dc.description | Abstract: This report presents the results of an investigation conducted to collect, document, and evaluate data on field fortifications constructed from materials normally used in other military applications. Information was collected from numerous sources including returning troop units, "lessons learned" reports, periodicals, design drawings, photographs, etc. As a result of reviewing the collected data, it was apparent that materials such as landing mats, shipping containers, U-shaped steel pickets, POL drums, culvert pipe sections, and ground membranes had widespread application in a variety of troop-type construction. Examples were found of protective structures which, instead of providing protection, probably were a hazard to occupants. Two of the materials, M8Al landing mat and U-shaped steel pickets, were commonly used as beams to support sandbag roof cover for protective structures. Laboratory tests were conducted to develop design criteria for the use of landing mat and pickets when used as roof elements. Recommendations are made as to the proper use of these two (and other) materials, and suggestions are offered which should improve their future use if employed in similar applications. | - |
