dc.description | Purpose: The purpose of this investigation has been to study (1) temperature changes within laboratory specimens of sand due to suddenly impressed surface temperatures and (2) the thermal conductivity of several representative materials commonly used for base course construction beneath pavements and one sample of bituminous concrete. The materials selected for testing were limited to those which are non-frost susceptible, that is, materials in which frost action is not possible. In connection with the analysis of test results it was necessary to utilize and develop theoretical solutions for temperature changes under ideal conditions. These studies are included in this report. Also included is a brief summary of the work accomplished by H. E. Patten on thermal conductivity and the results of his investigations are compared with those reported herein. All tests for thermal conductivity were limited to the material in the unfrozen state. | - |
