dc.descriptionSummary: Two shear vanes of different size were used to measure the shear and frictional resistance of snow at various normal pressures. Tests were conducted in Northern Michigan and in Greenland. The relationship between shear and frictional resistance and normal pressure was found to be linear in 60% of the tests and exponential in about 20% of the tests. There was no apparent relationship in the other 20%. Values for the angle of shearing resistance, Φs, and angle of internal friction, Φf, were about the same for artificially disaggregated snow and for snow which was undisturbed prior to the test. These values compared favorably with values computed from data obtained in vehicular tests. The results of trials with the large-and small-diameter shear vanes on the same type of snow indicate that the size of the instrument may influence the values obtained. The trials indicate some dependence of Φs and Φf on snow density. This type of instrument appears to yield larger values for Φf than obtained by experiments with snow blocks sliding on an inclined snow plane.-
