Abstract: Approximate solutions of temperature distribution and melting rate of ice have been obtained for the case where the mode of heat transfer is natural convection due to the thermal instability caused by the heated lower surface. Extensive numerical solutions were obtained for the ice-water system corresponding to various thermal conditions in terms of parameters defined as š–± āˆ†š–³= (š–³š—Œ - Tš—†) / (Tš—† -Tš—ˆ) and Φ = š–«/š–¢š—‰ (Tš—† - Tš—ˆ), where š–³š—Œ is the temperature fo the heat source, Tš—† is the melting point of ice, Tš—ˆ is the initial temperature of ice, š–« is the latent heat of fusion, and š–¢š—‰ is the heat capacity of ice.-
