Abstract: The use of fractals for the generation of artificial terrains is presented. An introduction to the introduction to the relevant basic properties of fractals is given and a method for the generation of artificial fractal landscapes is described. The algorithm has been used to develop a LISP computer program for synthesizing topographic surfaces. Examples of the resulting structures are given in the form of a series of profiled surfaces representing landscapes of varying fractal dimension and varying vertical dilation. The LISP computer programs are also given and described.
