Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note-
Purpose: Over the past few decades, several attempts have been made to reduce sedimentation in harbors and navigation channels. The National Research Council (1987) appointed a committee that produced a report on regional sedimentation control to reduce maintenance dredging of navigational facilities in estuaries. Wicker (1965) described fundamentals of tidal hydraulics related to estuarine shoaling. McCartney et al. (1991) published lessons learned on estuary waterways projects studied by the US Army Corps of Engineers, and by the Committee on Tidal Hydraulics. This Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note (CHETN), which is more comprehensive than McCartney et al. (1991), draws general conclusions and offers updated lessons learned that cover an additional 10 years of experience. Many of the mistakes made in the past have been very expensive and sometimes irreversible. The objective of this CHETN is to provide information on lessons learned from past projects so as to avoid similar mistakes in future projects. NOTE: This is a revised edition of a CHETN that was originally released in June of 2002.-
