Abstract: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District (USACE) contracted Advanced Environmental Management Group, LLC (AEM Group) to perform sediment analysis services for the evaluation of sediment located within the Federal Navigation Channel of Manitowoc Harbor (MT), located in Manitowoc, Wisconsin on Lake Michigan in accordance with the USACE Order for Supplies or Services and scope of work (SOW) dated April, 2019. Appendix A – Figure 1 shows the location of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Figure 2 shows the location of Manitowoc Harbor. The purpose of this project is to characterize sediments in Manitowoc Harbor for the purpose of estimating environmental impacts of the disposal of dredged materials. The SOW included the collection and physical and chemical analysis of sediment samples at 14 predetermined locations selected by the USACE. Field locations were selected by USACE based on shoaling thickness, water depth, sediment elevation, and dredge elevation for that area of the Federal Navigation Channel for the purpose of determining environmental effects associated with disposal. Sample locations are shown in Appendix A – Figure 3. Sampling occurred on July 16 and 17, 2019. The sampling team consisted of Mariah Hope and Adam Costanzo from AEM Group. Great Lakes Environmental Center (GLEC) provided the drilling services, including a calm water capable 26-foot pontoon sampling boat with detachable direct push tooling onboard. AEM Group collected sediment samples using a direct push sampler to obtain the amount of sediment required for analytical purposes or until refusal. Sampling, sample handling, and analytical procedures were conducted in accordance with the SOW and specifications of the USACE contract W911XK-16-D-0014, in addition to “Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater,” 16th Ed, Am. Pub. Health Assoc., or “Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste,” 3rd Ed, U.S. EPA No. SW-846, DoD Quality Systems Manual v4.2/5.0, and “Description of Soils (Visual-Manual Procedure)”, ASTM D 2488-69. The laboratory subcontracted was Trace Analytical Laboratories, Inc., (Trace) of Muskegon, Michigan for the chemical and physical analyses of the sediments. This report provides documentation of the field survey and describes the field activities that occurred, the samples collected, and the conditions encountered during the survey. AEM Group's sampling team collected digital photographs for the samples and sample locations and maintained the field logs for this project.
