Abstract: This project seeks to understand and quantify the effect of vessel wakes on the erosion of cohesive, scarped shorelines. More recently, quantifying the relationship between wave energy and the resulting impact loads is desired. This field exercise served to test the performance of various instrumentation in a field setting. In particular, the site acted as a proving ground for newly acquired load cells and the corresponding data acquisition system. Data from these tests are being used to determine any needed adjustments to the instrument system or data collection system. The ultimate objective is to develop a mathematical relationship to relate vessel wake energy to impact loads. During test days, the R/V Parker was used to generate vessel wakes from different operating speeds. The work was conducted in Cocodrie, Louisiana near the southern entrance of the Houma Navigation Canal (29.683638N, 81.224455W). Logistical support was provided by personnel of the Louisiana Marine Consortium (LUMCON), which also served as vessel launch and staging area.
