Abstract: | Dilatancy — relative opening of a joint surface as a result of shearing — is important in rock masses at normal stresses below several thousand psi. This article discusses the important geological factors bearing on dilatancy, identifies classes of behavior, and shows how stiffness and dilatancy properties can be measured. Two methods of introducing dilatancy properties in finite element analysis are presented together with examples of computational results. |
