| Abstract: | Report No. 1, "Permeability of Foundation Soils," was scheduled through Fiscal Years 1968 and 1969 and is the first of 7 reports on the subject of behavior of large hydraulic structures on the lower Arkansas River. Preparation of this report consisted of collecting pump test data and compiling actual construction dewatering pumping rates, elevations of water in dewatering wells, elevations of various points along the phreatic surface as determined by piezometers, and using this data to determine the coefficient of permeability of the foundation sands at pile-founded locks and dams. The permeability values determined from the data were compared to those used in the design of the construction dewatering and/or permanent seepage control measures. Among other things included in the report are: (1) Basis for selection of permeability values used in design. (2) Comparison of cofferdam infiltration rates determined from operating data with rates based on design calculations. (3) Indicated adequacies of the construction dewatering systems. Tables and drawings were taken directly from design memoranda, contract drawings, and pumping test reports as much as possible. No attempt was made to reconcile differences in the manner of presentation of boring log information.
