Abstract: A preliminary cultural resource reconnaissance to establish the general type and determine the site density probability within the lower Kansas River Valley was initiated during November—December 1976, The area in which this preliminary study was conducted consisted of that portion of the Kansas River floodplain from Turner Bridge downstream to the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers. The primary concern of the investigation relates to the proposed Kansas River Navigation Project and what effects, dredging, disposal, and channel maintenance will have on cultural resources. During the present investigation, two (2) previously unreported archaeological sites were recorded: 14WY101 and 14WY102. No previously known sites were located within the study area. Neither of the two sites recorded by this survey are located within nor peripheral to the designated project areas and apparently will not be affected by the navigation project. The present investigation recommends the inclusion of fifteen (15) architecturally significant structures to the Kansas Historic Sites Survey. Available project plans were insufficient to determine the impact to these structures. It is recommended that the State Historic Preservation Program of Kansas be made aware of these structures prior to any project activities. The results of the present investigation suggest that further intensive surveying would not be warranted within the proposed navigation project boundaries. However, there exists a probability that buried historic and prehistoric cultural materials are present within the study area. It is therefore the recommendation of this report that a professional archaeologist be present to monitor any earth-moving activities initiated within the project area.
