Abstract: An evaluation of environmental data requirements and needs for the comprehensive planning of water and related land resources of the Yazoo River Basin was conducted. The information gathered is provided in Volume II of this report and covers the geology; physiography; physicochemical characteristics; and the aquatic, terrestrial, and sociocultural resources of the Yazoo Basin. Sufficient data are not currently available to enable the U.S. Army Engineer District, Vicksburg, to implement its plan of study in accordance with the guidelines of "Principles and Standards" of the Water Resources Council; therefore, it is recommended that an Information Assimilation and Evaluation Program (IAEP) be initiated in order to formulate and accomplish the plan of study for the Yazoo Basin by 1980. This 5-year program includes the development of a Resource Information System for data management; environmental baseline investigations of physical, chemical, biological, and socioeconomic factors; environmental impact investigations of actual construction projects; analysis of changes taking place due to natural processes; and special investigations to evaluate nonstructural alternatives to floodwater and runoff management. Relative cost and duration for each of the 33 work units in the IAEP are provided. Throughout the description of the IAEP, three points are emphasized: the necessity for information exchange and coordination between work units, response of the IAEP to guidelines of "Principles and Standards," and the importance of public participation and coordination in the planning process.
