| Abstract: | This environmental assessment is written in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, as amended, the Council on Environmental Quality Regulations for Implementing the Procedural Provisions of the NEPA, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Planning Regulations. It presents an evaluation of the potential impacts associated with the proposed placement of dredged material from the operations and maintenance dredging of the San Francisco Main Ship Channel (MSC) onto Ocean Beach for beach nourishment. The proposed placement of MSC maintenance dredging material on Ocean Beach and the operation and maintenance dredging of the MSC are authorized by separate authorities and are separate projects. The MSC provides the source material for Ocean Beach; however, the MSC is maintenance dredged every year and this action would occur independently of the proposed placement at Ocean Beach described in this EA. The Federal Base Plan for maintenance dredging of the MSC, as practiced for the past several decades, is dredging by a hopper dredge, such as the Essayons, with placement in the designated nearshore placement sites located s off of Ocean Beach—SF-8 or the Ocean Beach Demonstration Site (encompassed by the proposed placement site SF-17). The evaluation of the potential impacts associated with the O&M dredging of the MSC is presented in the Final Environmental Assessment/Environmental Impact Report for Maintenance Dredging of the Federal Navigation Channels in San Francisco Bay Fiscal Years 2015-2024. Placement of material on Ocean Beach is evaluated in this EA and is contingent upon availability of funds; and the availability of appropriate dredging equipment. |
