Abstract: This technical note describes the use of artificial materials or shells of species other than oysters (e.g., surf clams or whelks) to construct oyster reefs. Alternative materials, whether used as a reef base with a veneer of shells, or to construct entire reefs, offer a viable option in oyster restoration efforts. This report provides information on the potential use of such materials to restore both intertidal and subtidal oyster reefs.
