Abstract: | The Las Cruces Dam Environmental Restoration Study is being conducted by the USACE, Albuquerque District, and the City of Las Cruces. The purpose of the study is to determine the Federal interest in the implementation of an ecosystem restoration project in the flood pool area of Las Cruces Dam. This study will identify ecosystem restoration and incidental recreation alternatives that are technically feasible, economically practicable, environmentally sound, and publicly acceptable. The study focuses on environmental restoration measures to improve structure and function of the Chihuahuan Desert riparian ecosystem within the study area. Degradation of the riparian habitats within the study was caused in part by construction and operation of the Las Cruces Dam as described in section 1.3, below. The City of Las Cruces, as the non-Federal sponsor, supports the proposed project purposes. |
