Abstract: | The study effort documented herein assesses the biological problems associated with Finger Lakes and seeks possible solutions. The overall purpose of this project is rehabilitation, enhancement, and maintenance of diverse backwater habitat for fish (primarily centrarchids). Following construction of the lock and dam system in the 1930's, the five Finger Lakes were formed essentially as they are seen today. Within the present lake system, there are periods of low dissolved oxygen (D.O.) conditions in portions of the lakes. Although existing conditions within the backwater complex indicate that habitat conditions are generally good, continued D.O. problems in these areas are a limiting factor affecting fish populations within the lakes. All project features have been studied and designed with the purpose of improving dissolved oxygen conditions in the existing Finger Lakes system. This was achieved by the following general procedure. First, the water resources in the vicinity.were identified and related to the habitat problems (present and future) in the area. This information was then used to develop and evaluate a number of potential plans to address these problems . From this array, the best design was selected and further defined in sufficient detail to allow for a recommendation to proceed with plans and specifications and eventual construction. |
