dc.description.abstract | The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mississippi Valley Division, New Orleans District, has prepared this Individual Environmental Report #19 (IER #19) to evaluate the potential impacts associated with the proposed excavation of nine Pre-Approved Contractor Furnished borrow areas. The proposed action areas are located in southeastern Louisiana and southwest Mississippi. The purpose of the proposed action is to identify borrow areas that contain suitable material that can be excavated to supply Federal HPS levee and floodwall projects. The proposed action resulted from the need to provide a total of over 100,000,000 cubic yards of suitable clay for HPS projects that include the completion and improvement of hurricane protection levees in southeastern Louisiana. Raising levee elevations and the completion of levees requires the excavation of material from borrow areas necessary for project construction to ensure 100-year level of flood protection for local communities. The term “100-year level of protection,” as it is used throughout this document, refers to a level of protection which reduces the risk of hurricane surge and wave driven flooding that the New Orleans Metropolitan area has a 1% chance of experiencing each year. | en_US |
