Wetland regulatory personnel frequently need quantitative information about shallow hydrologic regimes of wetlands and adjacent uplands. Monitoring wells and piezometers are some of the easiest instruments to use to determine depth of shallow water tables. Most of the literature on piezometers and monitoring wells, however, deals with installation to greater depths than needed for wetland regulatory purposes. This technical note describes methods of construction and installation of monitoring wells and piezometers placed at depths within and immediately below the soil profile using hand-held equipment.en_US
