Abstract: Approximately 100 commercial laboratories performed routine tests to determine physical properties of three samples of soil under the sponsorship of the .American Council of Independent Laboratories, Inc. These results were statistically analyzed at the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station to determine what variations might be expected in test results from commercial laboratories selected at random. Values determined by three "umpire" laboratories using carefully prescribed test procedures are included for comparison. The results show deviations from the mean to be of considerable magnitude in many instances, indicating a wider than commonly expected variation in values determined by the commercial laboratories.
