Description: | Technical Memorandum From the Introduction: The use of large piles to support platforms for offshore oil drilling, radar stations, and shore protection structures has led to a desire for more exact information on the forces which waves exert on piles. Measurements of wave forces on piles have been made in the prototype large wave tank at the Beach Erosion Board. Forces have been measured on a 12-inch pipe pile due to waves from 2 to 7 feet high with periods from 3.75 to 16 seconds with water depths from 5 to 16 feet. The forces were measured from 5.3 feet above the bottom of the tank to above the still water level. The maximum force is reported herein for non-breaking waves against a single pile, against the center pile of a three-pile bent, and against a single pile with breaking waves. |
