Technical Memorandum-
From the Preface: One of the important phases of the study of the effects of waves on the shore is the modification of the wave trains as they approach shore through shallow water. This report presents the results of a field investigation of the loss of Wave energy from ocean waves passing through shallow coastal waters. The field observations were made in the shallow coastal waters in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana and Texas. The results of the field observations are compared with existing theoretical treatments of the subject. Also considered are the wave energy losses due to the oscillatory adjustment of the bottom to the variation in wave pressure caused by the passage of the surface waves. The analyses of the wave records taken in connection with the project are included for comparison with previously published data on the statistical distribution of wave heights in ocean wave trains.-
