Abstract: The study reported herein was performed as a part of Department of the Army Project 1-T-0-21701-A-046, "Trafficability and Mobility Research, Task 1-T-0-21701-A-046-02, "Surface Mobility," by personnel of the U. S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES), under the general supervision of Mr. W. J. Turnbull, Chief, Soils Division; Mr. S. J. Knight, Chief, Army Mobility Research Branch; and Mr. A. A. Rula, Chief, Mobility Environmental Research Studies Branch. Mr. c. L. Rone was in charge of the test program and was assisted by Mr. V. Cassino and Mr. R. F. Ballard, Jr. Mr. J. J. Loviza of the WES Machine Shop assisted in the design and construction of the test penetrometer and in the mechanical features of the test program. Mr. C. A. Blackmon, Trafficability Section, prepared the plan of test, instructed the test personnel in the collection of the data, and performed the analysis of the data herein. This report was prepared by Messrs. Blackmon, Knight, and Rone. Col. Edmund H. Lang, CE, and Col. Alex G. Sutton, Jr., CE, were Directors of the WES during this investigation and the preparation and publication of this report. Mr. J. B. Tiffany was Technical Director.
