Summary: This report presents a rather detailed description of the office studies relating to the hydraulic analysis of selected reaches and cross sections of the District portion of the Lower Mississippi River. These studies are a part of the general potamology investigation for improving techniques for stabilizing the bed and banks of the Mississippi River. The general purpose of the previous studies has been to analyze the hydraulic elements and factors of river cross sections, to establish optimum widths, depths and area-depth relations, to determine allowable limits of these factors, and to ascertain the relation of radii of curvature and deflection angles to width and depth. A general review of current and previous studies is contained in the introduction along with the description of the scope and objectives of the studies. Sections on the review of pertinent literature and theoretical approaches to the analysis of alluvial river cross sections are also included in the report. Data are presented and analyzed for two typical meandering reaches and two typical straight reaches while a more intensive analysis is made of data from one of the meandering reaches and one of the straight reaches. Discussion of the results of the analyses is presented along with figures and charts. A number of the more important variables including general hydraulic factors, channel geometry factors, and energy loss and roughness factors are related to distance in channel profiles. Some of these factors are also related to stage, discharge, bend curvature, and sediment discharge. A section is devoted to statistical analyses of the frequency distribution of a number of factors. Possible applications of the hydraulic data are discussed including the many limitations of the practicable application of these factors to design and evaluation of river control structures. Additional studies proposed include the effect of geology on the regime of the river, overall effects of sediment deposition and erosion, power and momentum studies of flow in bends, transitions, crossings and straight reaches, and studies of tractive force and Froude number relations with more important hydraulic factors.
