Potamology Report-
Introduction: Huntington Point, on the left bank of the Mississippi River at about mile 549 AHP, has been subject to active bank caving for a long period of time. However, until recently bank protection works have not been considered necessary, since the point is not settled and the main-line levee, which cute across the base of the point, has not been endangered. The active bank caving has been shifting downstream gradually, however, and the tip of Huntington Point now is being eroded quite rapidly. Unless further erosion is halted, Yellow Bend revetment, located across the river and about two miles downstream, will be subject to acute attack and flanking. For this reason a revetment was constructed at Huntington Point in the summer of 1949. An investigation of bank stability at Huntington Point was conducted in June and July 1949 by the Vicksburg District in conjunction with the design of the slopes to be graded and revetted. The revetment, completed in September 1949, is located between miles 550 and 552 ABP. Two failures occurred between completion of construction and the end of the 1950 high-water period; one was deep and one relatively shallow. The purposes of the investigation reported herein were to determine the soil conditions in the vicinity of the deep failure and to estimate the susceptibility of the remainder of the site to flow failures, using the most recent information evolvins from the potamology program. Data pertaining to the shallow failure are presented also.-
