Summary: The results of laboratory tests performed on three standard soil samples by U.S. Army Engineer Division laboratori es are presented and analyzed in this report. Laboratory tests performed were Atterberg limits, specific gravity, grain-size analysis, standard effort compaction, and R triaxial compression tests with pore pressure measurements. The procedures used were those specified in the latest test manuals as modified by the 1963 Division Soils Laboratory Conference. The analysis of test data indicates that the test results showed a rather wide variation in measured properties, especially for values of optimum water content, maximum dry density, and shear strength. It is considered that a large part of the observed variability (except for triaxial test results) would normally be expected and is not a reflection of incorrect or inconsistent test procedures. Because of the many interrelated variables involved, conclusive reasons could not be established for the important and wide variation in measured shear strength. The procedures used in processing and packaging the soil samples shipped to the participating laboratories, and OCE instructions for the tests to be performed on them are given in Appendixes A and B, respectively.
