Abstract: The study reported herein was conducted in furtherance of Department of the Army Research and Development Project l-V-0-21701-A-046, "Trafficability and Mobility Research," Task 02, "Surface Mobility." This project is under the sponsorship and guidance of the Development Directorate, U. S. Army Materiel Command. Field tests and preparation of the report werecoordinated efforts of the U. s. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES), Vicksburg, Miss., and the U. S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, Forest Engineering Research, Auburn University, Auburn, Ala. Tests were performed near LeTourneau Station, approximately 10 miles south of Vicksburg, Miss., and in the Delta National Forest, approximately 24 miles north of Vicksburg, from 3-7 April 1967. The tests were conducted under the general supervision of Mr. w. J. Turnbull, Technical Assistant for Soils and Environmental Engineering, and Messrs. W. G. Shockley and S. J. Knight, Chief and Assistant Chief, respectively, of the Mobility and Environmental Division; Mr. A. A. Rula, Chief of the Vehicle Studies Branch; and Mr. E. S. Rush, Chief of the Soil-Vehicle Studies Section. The field testing was directed by Messrs. J. H. Robinson, engineer, and R. P. Smith, mathematician, Soil-Vehicle Studies Section, and Mr. B. Y. Richardson, engineer, Forest Engineering Research, Auburn University, Auburn, Ala. Messrs. Robinson, Smith, and Richardson prepared this report. Acknowledgement is made to the Anderson-Tully Co. of Vicksburg and the Delta National Forest, Mr. Herbert Rice, Forest Ranger, for permission to use their lands for test areas and to Taylor Machine Works, Louisville, Miss., for :furnishing the test vehicle and driver. Directors of the WES during the test program and preparation of this report were COL John R. Oswalt, Jr., CE, and COL Levi A. Brown, CE. Technical Director was Mr. J. B. Tiffany.
