Summary: Equations relating the accretion and decay of sea ice to standard meteorological data are derived empirically from observations at 5 stations (Alert, Eureka, Isachsen, Mould Bay, and Resolute) with varying periods of record from 1947-1957. The equations differ from existing formulas in that they are differential in nature, to permit calculation of ice growth by increments, and contain a separate term allowing for variations in snow-cover depths. The use of the formulas requires only a knowledge of air temperatures and snow depths. A good correlation is found between the decrease in ice thickness and accumulated degree days above -1.8°C. The location of each station, the names of the surrounding water bodies, and the approximate water depths where ice thickness measurements were made are listed in Appendix A; the techniques used in the measurements are described in Appendix B; data on observed ice thickness are tabulated in Appendix C; and accumulated degree days of frost and average snow depths for 20-cm. increments of ice growth are tabulated in Appendix D.
