Abstract: Penetrometer tests were performed in the field on natural snow to determine the work of compaction. It was found that the work per unit area was independent of the penetrometer area and was not a strong function of velocity. The power used to compact snow is much less than that available from over-snow vehicles. Other effects must be responsible for the high observed energy losses.
