dc.description.abstract | This review of the design and performance of the embankment and foundation of Blakely Mountain Dam was prepared to make data available that might be of use in the design of future Corps of Engineers earth dams. Blakely Mountain Dam, a flood-control and power project, is a rolled-fill earth structure about 230 ft high and 1200 ft long at the top, and contains about 4,000,000 cu yd of fill. It is provided with a flood-control tunnel, having a capacity of 20,000 cfs with pool at flood-control elevation, and a power tunnel. A pool at spillway crest will create a net head of about 190 ft; a surcharge pool will create a net head of about 200 ft. The spillway and outlet works are founded on shale and fractured rock; consequently, their foundations are not pertinent to this review. Piezometers and a settlement-measuring apparatus in the foundation and embankment are being used to obtain performance data. | en_US |
