|Abstract:||The U.S. Army must maintain hundreds of thousands of acres as firing ranges for soldiers’ mission readiness. The Army also is required to monitor and remediate environmental contaminants from training activities that are conducted on those ranges as a part of AR 350-19, the Sustainable Ranges Program. Climate changes are likely to cause an increase in the frequency and intensity of temperature and precipitation anomalies, and there are likely to be related impacts to the contaminants that accumulate in firing ranges. Range man-agers need a tool to adopt appropriate remediation strategies in the face of these changes. The Risk and Decision Science Group of the Engineering Research and Development Center’s Environmental Laboratory developed a climate and range evaluation spreadsheet tool (Climate_Change_Range.xlsx) to evaluate a suite of contaminant management alternatives for military firing ranges, based on remediation cost and duration. This instruction-al document was subsequently developed to accompany that tool. Army range managers can now use the tool and this instructional guide as an aid to long-term range planning in the face of climate changes.|
