A study was conducted to determine the effects of below-freezing temperatures and frozen ground on the output response of the enclosed-wire-in-tube (EWIT) sensor. The analysis of the results of below-freezing response tests indicated that low temperatures (neglecting the medium) did not cause a noticeable change in EWIT response. The analysis of the results of frozen soil tests showed that an increased depth of frost penetration caused a corresponding decrease in EWIT response by as much as 30 db. The analysis of the results of response tests conducted in soft and rigid unfrozen ground where shear moduli approximated that of unfrozen and frozen ground, respectively, showed that an increase in the rigidity of the emplacement media caused a decrease in EWIT response that was comparable to the decrease experienced under frozen-ground conditions.en_US
