Abstract: Abstract: The site preparation and earthwork requirements will detail activities presently missing in the proposed McMurdo Station Master Plan. Before placing buildings, the site requires significant preparation to adjust the topography. This preliminary assessment provides the summary for site preparation and earthwork requirements. Several buildings have walls that will have to retain earth material. There are several areas that require a significant quantity of gravel material to fill the ground for the foundation and for around the buildings while other sections require cutting and relocating the native earth material. Vulnerability for ice and snow accumulation is an issue because space between buildings is tight; therefore, this assessment recommends potential alter-native locations to provide more open space and minimize the operational interruptions. Improvements for drainage (e.g., surface runoff and snow and ice buildup that impedes drainage) are also part of site preparation and earthwork to protect future infrastructure.
