Introduction: The U. S. Army Coastal Engineering Research Center, located in Washington, D. C., is the principal research and development facility of the Corps of Engineers for coastal engineering. Through basic and applied research, effective means are developed for preventing erosion of sea and lake shores by waves and currents and for improving the design of hurricane protection and navigation projects. The collection and analysis of environmental data, such as historical data, wave statistics, and locations of offshore sources of sand, are important parts of the Center's mission.en_US
