| dc.description.abstract | Abstract: The Tennessee-Tombigbee Corridor, the 51-county area affected by operation of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, has abundant and diverse environmental resources. These resources are affected to a lesser or greater degree by the operation of the waterway. Conservation, management, and/or development of these resources is primarily the responsibility of local and regional planners. This report, part of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Corridor Study, identifies planning and management alternatives for the environmental resources of-the Corridor area that can be implemented by local and regional planners. The planning and management alternatives were developed for specific resource or resource protection categories. These categories include: floodplains, farmlands, wetlands, soil conservation, forest resources, water resources, ground water, cultural resources, urban and industrial lands, aquifer protection, recreation planning, and wildlife and wildland resources. The alternatives were developed by examining the following: a.) The data base of environmental resources developed by the Corridor Study. b.) Existing technical information and research available to the planner. c.) Legal and statutory basis for local planning and management for the resource. d.) Capability, in terms of manpower and finances, to implement potential alternatives. In addition, for each State in the Corridor, the legal requirements relating to environmental resources are summarized. These reviews focus on permit and regulatory requirements for development or land use changes. For example, appropriate water quality, air quality, and hazardous waste standards are either included or referenced. | en_US |
