dc.description.abstractForeword: Successful solution of shore problems depends in large measure upon knowledge and understanding of the shore processes which affect the behavior of the shore. A better understanding of such processes is being sought by the Coastal Engineering Research Center through several different approaches. Much insight relative to past and current status of these processes would be expected to be obtainable from the geologic structure of the area along with characteristics of the beach and nearshore sediments. This report presents a qualitative study of relationships between provenance and movement of beach sand and wave and current action on a long-term basis along the portion of the northern California coast between Drakes Bay and the Russian River. Field investigations involving extensive sampling of beaches and surface sediments of the Continental Shelf were also obtained. More detailed information on shore processes was provided by mineralogical analysis of the samples. The heavy mineral analysis generally confirmed findings of the basic evaluation that beaches adjacent to Point Reyes and Bodega Head are generally in equilibrium, and that negligible quantities of sand move around headlands in the area. This report was prepared at the Hydraulics Engineering Laboratory of the University of California at Berkeley under a National Science Foundation Grant G-18123 with some support in its later stages of preparation under Contract DA-49-055-civ eng - 63-4 with CERC which provides in part for study of transport of coastal sediments by wind, waves, and currents. The author, John Cherry, was at that time a graduate student at the University. This report is published under authority of Public Law 166, 79th Congress, approved July 31, 1945, as supplemented by Public Law 172, 88th Congress, approved November 7, 1963.en_US
