Preface: The pavement evaluation report presented herein was prepared in accordance with the instructions and outline for "Zone of Interior Pavement Evaluation." Authority for the Waterways Experiment Station to conduct the studies is contained in the 1st indorsement dated 12 August 1952, to basic letter dated 22 July 1952, from the Office, Chief of Engineers, subject "Instructions and Outline, Zone of Interior Pavement Evaluation." The airfields at which studies are conducted are recommended by the Waterways Experiment Station subject to modification by the Office, Chief of Engineers, and Headquarters U. s. Air Force. Sheppard Air Force Base was designated for evaluation in the 1st indorsement referenced above. The field work at Sheppard Air Force Base was accomplished by the Waterways Experiment Station evaluation team in July 1952. The team was composed of Messrs. A. H. Joseph, soils and pavement engineer, and R. B. Wilson, A.G. Lee, c. A. Blackmon, and J. w. Loviza, soils technicians. This report was prepared by Mr. A. H. Joseph. The investigation was performed under the general supervision of Messrs. C. R. Foster and W. J. Turnbull. Acknowledgment is made to the officers and men of Sheppard Air Force Base for their assistance and cooperation in the field studies.
