dc.descriptionGeneral: This memorandum is a report on the failure of a test embankment which forms a part of the Pendleton New Levee. The new levee crosses an old bend of the Arkansas River near Pendleton, Arkansas (see plate 1) and at one point is underlain by all extremely weak clay stratum, averaging about 12 feet in thickness. At that location, the most economical design and construction procedure was to displace the clay by building up the section until failure occurred. The test embankment was designed to fail; and thus it furnished a full scale test case for studying methods of design and the physics of n foundation failure.-
