Technical memorandum-
Preface: This memorandum constitutes a report on a study of the efficacy of certain locations for drainage systems within a pervious levee. Sand levees on impervious foundations, such as exist at various places along the Mississippi, are often subject to an excessive amount of seepage during floods. Nearly, all of the seepage in such cases emerges on the landside slope, often more than halfway, to the crown, and erodes the lower part of the slope as it flows off. The installation of drainage systems in new or existing levees to depress the free-surface or topmost flowline to such an extent that it does not emerge on the landside slope has been shown by this study, to be practical. The establishment of the flow patterns for drains at various locations beneath the landside slope of the model levee, together with the determination of the relative seepage quantities discharged by the various drainage systems furnish data requisite to application of the results of this study to the prototype.-
